Never expect a door chain lock.

Before creating a credit card payment or using an ATM machine, check the apparatus for added-on cameras or "skimming technology" When a card reader seems to have been tampered with some thing appears strange about an ATM machine, find another device and notify someone in the store or bank which something may be amiss. Obviously, do exactly the same for almost any machine which requires a biometric scan of yourself - if something seems to have been added to the device, don't offer the machine with your own fingerprints, or let it scan your iris, etc..
Put tissues in peepholes.
If you are ever staying at a hotel room which has a door with an uncovered peephole, put a crumpled tissue in the peephole so that nobody could see into your room through the peephole. Most peephole one-way technology can be defeated. In case you've got a peephole with no pay at home assume that people are able to see through it from the outside into your house.
In emergency situations use flashlights for light - candles.
Don't use candles for light during power failures brought on by wind-related weather conditions (e.g., hurricanes) until after the adverse weather has passed. Besides the simple fact that candles can be dangerous in general (especially if there are kids in the house and/or when the candles are carried around when walking throughout the home), strong winds may hurl objects through windows - creating scenarios where candles are exposed to wind that may knock them over and begin a dangerous fire.
